Distributed Database System Increases Performance, Granularity of Reporting and Drives New Revenue Optimization Features

(Mountain View, CA) May 17, 2010 - Ooyala, a leading provider of end-to-end video platform applications and services, announced today that it has deployed Cassandra as its new Database system. The distributed database system will enhance Ooyala's current analytics offering and create the backbone for its new Business Intelligence platform for video that will go live later this year. Ooyala was identified as a leader with best-in-class analytics and monetization capabilities by independent research firm Forrester Research Inc. in their December 2009 report, The Forrester Wave™: US Online Video Platforms, Q4 2009..

Cassandra is the distributed database system that Facebook developed and open-sourced in 2008. The database brings together the scalability and reliability of both Amazon's Dynamo and Google's Bigtable storage systems in a single data model.  Cisco, Facebook, Digg and IBM are all using Cassandra to manage large data sets for various applications.

With Cassandra, Ooyala will enhance its existing analytics offering and launch a new Business Intelligence system later this year.

"In the world of terrestrial broadcasting and linear television, it is virtually impossible to truly understand what shows and ads people find interesting and engaging because there isn't a simple way to track TV viewing behavior," says Sean Knapp, co-founder and CTO at Ooyala. "On the Internet, it is possible to track this information, but there is so much information that most publishers don't know how to store, track or analyze it.  Cassandra will help us unveil a new generation of video analytics that will move our platform from reports, to insight that results in revenue maximization."

"Data alone does not solve problems – instead, you have to have the tools that help you use data to decipher business needs and requirements," says Jay Fulcher, President and CEO at Ooyala. "Cassandra offers us a data platform that will allow us to turn data into insights, which will enable our customers to make crucial business decisions."
